1900 (Aug 11): De La Rue composite Essay for the 10 s. value, with mauve head-plate inserted within indigo-purple imperforate frame showing country legend, Duty Plates now in both lower corners and "Postage" and "Revenue" moved to base, the Essay marked "H" at top left and dated at top right "Aug 11th 1900" with "Dupl." at base. Illustrated in the "De La Rue Collection" on page 6069. This was the last 'new' issue to be specifically designed for Queen Victoria. Rare and most attractive.

1903/04: £ 1 green & violet, wmk. Crown CA, an unused block of four, marginal from base of sheet with Plate Number '1' in margin, centred to right, horizontal bend on lower pair but of fine fresh colour, large part og., lower pair unmounted og. A very rare multiple, just 1'080 stamps issued Gi = £ 1'900+.

1902: De La Rue Proof for the proposed 1 d. postal stationery card attached to DLR Appendix sheet dated "21 March 1902" (the same day the adhesive stamps were approved), with legend "POST CARD / SOUTHERN NIGERIA" with coloured pink wash where the 1 d. indicia would be situated; signed and "Approved" by Sir William Mercer in ink. Sold together with the issued card and another overprinted SPECIMEN in black. The Essay with light vertical crease but exceptional and unique.

1897/98: 10 s. deep violet or bright violet (3), four unused examples, each corner marginal from the upper right corner of the sheets, with sheet requisition numbers 43, 60, 82 and 140 in red; all with fresh colours and generally fine; large part or unmounted og. A very scarce assembly with only 5'500 stamps (275 sheets) printed. A charming group.

1900 (April): 2 s. 6 d. green & ultramarine, a fine used example tied to small piece by 'Northern Nigeria' cds (March 21, 1902) in black. Choice and very scarce Gi = £ 850.

1894 (May): 2 d. lake and 2½ d. blue (two examples) used on 1897 registered cover to Banbury, UK tied by scarce "SOMBREIRO RIVER" datestamps (Oct 12) in black. Handstamped 'R' at left and oval framed 'Registered / Liverpool' transit datestamp with time code also on obverse (Nov 25). Reverse with "Bonny River" cds (Oct 20) and Banbury arrival cds's in black. Some peripheral aging around perfs. not detracting from the appearance of a charming and rare cover.rnProvenance: Harmers, London, 20 Dec 1994, lot 1493.

Southern Nigeria 1902: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelope used to Germany up-rated with 'Stamp Shortage' usage of Niger Coast 1897/98 2 d. lake pair tied by "Old Calabar River" circular datestamps in black (Jan 25). Reverse with Eilenburg arrival cds (Feb 17) in black. Slight damp spot on address panel but a scarce and attractive usage.

Niger Company Territories / Akassa 1894: Great Britain 1887 Jubilee 2½ d. purple on blue, a single example on 1894 cover to Sierra Leone, uncancelled, with oval framed "AGENT GENERAL / NIGER TERRITORIES" cachet in violet (Oct 3, earliest recorded use) and reverse with oval framed "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY CHARTERED & LIMITED / POST OFFICE / AKASSA" despatch (Sacher Type 3, SG Type 2) in violet (Oct 3). The obverse with three strikes of 'Freetown / Sierra Leone' arrivals (Oct 22). 1894 (Jan 1): 2½ d. carmine-lake, a horizontal strip of four used on 1894 quadruple rate cover to Camberley, Surrey endorsed 'S. S. Dahomey' all cancelled by "Bonny River" cds's in black (Jan 29) and by italic PAQUEBOT handstamp in black. "Paid / Liverpool / Br. Packet" cds in red on front (March 3) and Camberley arrival on reverse. Heavy file folds away from the adhesives but a scarce usage.

Niger Company Territories / Akassa 1895: Great Britain 1887 Jubilee 3 d. purple on yellow, a single example used on 1895 cover to the Royal Niger Co. in London, tied by fine double framed "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY / CHARTERED & LIMITED / POST OFFICE / AKASSA" despatch (Sacher Type 6, SG Type 4) in violet (June 2). Manuscript '1' in red crayon denoting the GPO credit to the Company at base. The cover with some aging and refolded for Exhibit display but an unusual franking.rnProvenance: Collection G.L.
