Antarctica: Early Exploration: Ross-Crozier Antarctic Expedition 1839-43, 1843 (Apr. 15) lengthy cross-written entire (dated Apr. 12) to her brother in Bedford, England, from Mrs. Mary Maclear in Cape Town, wife of H.M. Astronomer at the Cape, Thomas Maclear, with crowned G.P.O. Cape of Good Hope oval and Bedford July 4 arrival, backstamped framed “SHIP LETTER/PORTSMOUTH”, with postscript: “I had a visit from Captain Ross and Crozier from the Antarctic today. Antarctica: Early Exploration: HMS “Comus” Visit to Crozet and Kerguelen Islands 1880, Fascinating thirteen page letter on ship’s letterhead, written by Sub Lieut. William O. Story to his brother, dated Apr. 16 1880 (”Somewhere at sea”) and Apr. 25 (”Singapore”) Also most impressive map (420 x 447mm) of the voyage to Hong Kong via Crozet and Kerguelen Islands hand-drawn in ink on waterproof parchment. Also some research correspondence and reproduction photographs. The corvette HMS “Comus” had first visited the Crozet Islands in 1879 in search for the lost “Knowsley Hall”, an iron sailing vessel which had not been heard from since her departure from Liverpool in May of that year. In 1880 “Comus” returned to the Crozets in order to renew the search and to deposit a cache of provisions at Possession Island for the use of shipwrecked mariners. Photo.

Antarctica: Early Exploration: American Antarctic Expedition, letter dated May 21 1894 on expedition stationery signed by Frederick A. Cook, written to Albert Operti thanking him for his assistance in the recruitment of artists, some tearing along folds. A scarce item from this aborted expedition. Also a further letter to Operti signed by Cook, sent from Brooklyn Oct. 31 1899. Cook joined the 1897-99 Belgian Expedition and controversially later claimed to have reached the North Pole with two Inuit companions in April 1908 ahead of Robert Peary. Photo.

Antarctica: Early Exploration: First Sighting of the Antarctic Mainland 1820, 1850(ca.) stampless envelope addressed to Nathaniel Palmer, at his business address in New York, endorsed for possible redirection to Palmer’s home, “Please forward to Stonington Ct. if not there”, sent from Stockbridge, Mass. with red “JAN/17” despatch c.d.s. at left, slightly stained. Nathaniel Palmer, American sailing captain and explorer and his crew on the sealer “Hero”, had been on Nov. 17 1820 the first Americans to sight the Antarctic Peninsula, larger ships skippered by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Edward Bransfield having also reported sighting of land earlier in the year. Antarctica: Early Exploration: 1899 Seventh International Geographical Congress in Berlin, privately produced 5pf. stationery picture postcard locally addressed cancelled by fine strike of special Congress c.d.s. of Sept. 28 1899. After the landmark resolution at the previous Congress that the exploration of Antarctica was “the greatest piece of geographical exploration still to be undertaken”, the Seventh Congress, whilst encouraging international co-operation, decided upon a strict demarcation of areas of activity on the continent that encouraged a spirit of competition between countries in the following years.
