Antarctica: Early Exploration: 1899 Seventh International Geographical Congress in Berlin, privately produced 5pf. stationery picture postcard locally addressed cancelled by fine strike of special Congress c.d.s. of Sept. 28 1899. After the landmark resolution at the previous Congress that the exploration of Antarctica was “the greatest piece of geographical exploration still to be undertaken”, the Seventh Congress, whilst encouraging international co-operation, decided upon a strict demarcation of areas of activity on the continent that encouraged a spirit of competition between countries in the following years.
