Afghanistan, 1880 (Mar. 28), Second Afghan War, cover from Bala Hissar to Abergele, North Wales, ex-Sandbach correspondence franked India ½a and 4a stamps tied by pen strokes and indistinct barred cancellers. Fine strike of the 'FIELD P.O./Mar 28/No. 12' on reverse with Bombay transit and Abergele receiver. Long letter headlined Bala Hissar-Kabul-23rd March, 1880 describing local events, viz. '…General Vaughan is the correspondent of the 'Times' here. He is a Major-General with nothing to do, so he came up here as correspondent…I do not see how I can be home…they say all our enemies here are coming in to make terms with us…and I cannot leave this battery while it is on service.'.
