lot # 218 - Afghanistan
1915 Official cover with Royal insignia on the backflap and a matching seal, addressed in two languages to Lahore, India, refranked with Indian stamps in Peshawar, with "Registered" label (defective) and "from Afghan Postmaster Peshawar" added by hand, fine and unusual cover (although Afghanistan had issued its first postage stamps in 1871, it did not join the UPU. Afghan letters abroad were typically carried by mail runners paid in cash to the Indian border, then franked with Indian stamps for further transmission. To speed up this process, Afghanistan set up Contract Post Offices in Peshawar, and later in Quetta)
