China, 1878 (24 Sept.) envelope to Paris (17.11) showing "Customs/Newchwang" double-ring origin d.s., and bearing Peace and Commerce 5c. and 30c. (small corner defect), cancelled by large figures "5104", matching "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (3.10), and red "Paq. Ang. V. Brindisi/A. Mod." French entry c.d.s. (16.11) also tying the 30c. stamp, addressee's name and street address partially excised, very fine and rare cover sent through the Customs Post before the use of the Large Dragon stamps.

ONLY ELEVEN ENVELOPES ARE RECORDED WITH THE "CUSTOMS/NEWCHWANG" DOUBLE-RING D.S. USED PRIOR TO THE ISSUANCE OR USE OF THE LARGE DRAGON STAMPS. SEVEN ENVELOPES WERE SENT THROUGH THE JAPANESE POST OFFICE AND FOUR THROUGH THE FRENCH POST OFFICE.

Of the four envelopes sent through the French Post Office, all show the "Customs/Newchwang" datestamp struck on the front. Three of these (including the above) appear to be from the same correspondence and have parts of the recipient's name and address excised.

United States 2c. green stationery envelope from Oberlin, Ohio to Peking (16.1.95) via San Francisco (2.12), cancelled by duplex, showing on reverse "U.S. Postal Agency, Shanghai /Rec'd" c.d.s. (31.12), "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring d.s. in blue, and "Customs/Peking" double-ring d.s. also in blue (16.1), and on front handstruck "To Pay" h.s. in red, manuscript "Not-Known" and "Returned", and "U.S. Charge to Collect/6 Cents" unframed h.s. accompanied by U.S. Postage Due 3c. (2) applied on arrival and cancelled by black obliterator, San Francisco transit (2.3.95) and Oberlin arrival (6.3.95) c.d.s. for the return, very fine and interesting usage of this "To Pay" handstamp.

China, Customs Mail Matter, Hankow : 1883 (Sept.) neat envelope to North Marshfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. via Yokohama (6.10) and San Francisco (23.10), showing "Hankow Customs/Mail Matter" small unframed oval h.s. in red, matching "Customs/Hankow" double-ring origin d.s. in red and "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring transit d.s. in black, both on reverse, bearing on front Japan Koban 5s. applied over the Customs Mail Matter h.s., cancelled by "crossroads" type h.s., with "I.J. Postal Agency/Shanghai" double-ring d.s. (27.9) adjacent, envelope opened out for display with the Japanese stamp lifted and hinged back to show the Customs Mail Matter handstamp, very fine and early example of this Customs Mail Matter handstamp from the famous Oakman correspondence.

China, Customs Mail Matter, Wenchow : 1894 (20 Jan.) envelope to Bordeaux (5.3), showing "Wenchow Customs/Mail Matter" unframed oval h.s. in red, matching "Customs/Wenchow" origin and blue "Customs/Shanghai" transit (23.1) double-ring d.s., both on reverse, bearing on front France Peace and Commerce 25c., cancelled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (23.1) with "Modane à Paris" c.d.s. (4.3) in red adjacent, envelope has various faults including reduction at foot and missing flap at back, nevertheless a fine strike of this scarce Mail Matter handstamp.
