U.S.S. Los Angeles Collateral: Hull Fabric. Piece of fabric, about 4" x 3" bearing a small blue handstamp "U.S.S. Los Angeles", Very Fine.
Estimate $200 - 300

The Los Angeles was built in 1923-24 by the German Zeppelin company, where it was originally designated LZ 126. It was surrendered to the U.S. Navy by Germany as part of World War I reparations. It was decommissioned in 1932, but recommissioned for a period after the crash of the U.S.S. Akron in April 1933. She was soon returned to storage and finally struck off the Navy list in 1939, ending the career of the Navy's longest serving airship. Unlike her sister ships, the Akron, Macon, and Shenandoah, the Los Angeles' career did not suffer a disastrous ending

United States, 1936, Goodyear Airship Volunteer Flight Cover. 3¢ stamped envelope with 6¢ Winged Globe (C19) affixed, bearing the manuscript endorsement, entirely in the pilot's hand, "This letter was carried in the Goodyear Airship Volunteer on the flight from Sacramento to Los Angeles, Calif. Date March 26 & 27, 1936. [signed] A.T. Sewell, Pilot Captain". After landing in Los Angeles, Sewell apparently mailed the cover to its apparent maker, one Julius B. Webber of Sacramento; it is canceled by a March 28 Los Angeles machine cancel, with additional Air Mail duplex handstamp of the L.A. Arcade Annex P.O. and magenta winged "Via U.S. Air Mail" handstamp plus a "First Flight" handstamp; the cover also bears a red & blue label featuring an airship upon which Webber has written "Goodyear"; Webber has also written "First and Only Letter" above Sewell's endorsement and probably applied the "First Flight" handstamp., Very Fine, a unique piece of airship postal history.
