Lot 759 - PH: Palestine Mandate - Historama HISTORAMA AUCTION #7 - 'Buy or Bid' Sale

1st Day Mandate OETA mail / printed matter: 11 NO 1918 printed-matter greeting-card sized cover on "British Manufacture" stationary from JERUSALEM to officer in RAMC NAZERETH franked 1m per period 50g inland printed-matter rate using 1m typographed corner frank with gutters (Ba5) tied by full strike OETA EEF JERUSALEM single-circle date-stamp (Sacher-A8 - 28½mm size with index letter "A", as documented) on 1st day of use - also Armistice Day (end of WWI) - perhaps reason for this card); cover sealed by consignor (originally mailed unsealed per printed-matter regulations) - very rare rate & use of 1m as single frank on a cover; very fine, estimated value $1000+.

Although there are many forgeries of this type of mail on the market, those forgeries use Sacher/Glassman cancel type AG (reference 1979 edition of "The Postmarks and Other Markings of Mandate Jerusalem 1917-1948"), a documented forgery measuring 26mm and lacking an index letter. For further clarification please see the enclosed image composed of 4 images in a row: a) the postmark on this lot as measured (from 10mm onwards as the edge of the ruler isn't sufficiently complete); b) a point of reference between this postmark and a forgery - notice the straight lined forward-stroke of the letter "R" - compare this to the same in the next image (c) of the known forgery, where the stroke appears serifed; notice also differences in the appearance of the "J" and "E" at the start of each postmark; d) an image of Sacher-A8 as appears in his book "The Postal Markings of Mandate Palestine" (1997 edition).

Provinance: this cover comes from an enormous specialized collection of Jerusalem postmarks, spanning over 30 stock books - and according to its assembler this is one of the 3 largest known collections of Jerusalem postmarks in the world.

British franks on WWII era Mandate civilian mail: unusual 5 JULY 1946 printed matter cover all in Arabic from Kibbutz MISHMAR HAEMEK (return addressed "Ibrahim Nemery Al - Qantar" - KANTARA) to "Dear Sir Mordechai Presker, HaShiloach Street 9" HAIFA, franked 3m using Mandate pictorals stamp + single British 1d stamp (valued at 4x 1m) for a total of 7m - 1m overfranking for double 50g period printed matter rate of 3m. Although British stamps were authorized for military forces' mail in WWII, unclear how this was accepted so late, especially at an all-Jewish locale as Mishmar HaEmek (the home-base of the Palmach): the cover was tied by 2 strikes of the local skeleton postmark (Dorf-1), once on the franks & once in the field; unsealed per printed matter regulations. The manuscript notations in English & German (printed matter/mixed franking) on the top of the front may have been added by the local postal clerk to facilitate the delivery.

Highly unusual circumstance & correspondence: the sender was likely part of a British force sent to the area in response (Operation Agatha/Black Sabbath - 29 June) to the "Night of the Bridges" underground Zionist/Haganah operation of 16-17 June 1946, during the 1939-48 Zionist insurgency, to destroy 11 bridges linking Mandatory Palestine to the neighboring countries Lebanon, Syria, Transjordan & Egypt, in order to suspend the transportation routes used by the British Army. The sender may be from KANTARA Egypt or Lebanon (the latter possible, as in close proximity to this region of Israel).

Unusually routed incoming French airmail carried by sea: 15-9-1937 airmail commercial cover from MONTLHÉRY to correspondents c/o resident NAHARIYA (via Post Office box Haifa), franked 3.50Fr & tied by 5 strikes of local postmark + airmail etiquette; backstamped same day PARIS AVION (air) transit slogan postmark ("Save time Reply by Air Mail"); upon arrival apparently transferred directly to Haifa branch of private company "Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes" (Maritime Messengers Company) whose rare 22 SEP 1937 dated boxed cachet is stamped on the back & cover subsequently transferred to passenger aboard "S/S Champollion" & noted "28.9.37 Messageries Maritimes" per manuscript on front - presumably the addressees were in transit. Opened roughly at back, repaired; complete. The ship was built in 1924 and serviced a route between France-Lebanon-Palestine-Egypt, and was heavily used by immigrants to Palestine, Holocaust survivors and partisans; sank 1952. Messageries Maritimes was a French merchant shipping company.

Rare 2 mils printed matter rate applied to The Union of Religious Writers weekly paper "BaMishor" ('In the Field'), tied by 2m pictoral stamp (Ba 90), from JERUSALEM to TEL AVIV 23 DE 43. Sent to a "Sh. Ch. Kook" - probably Rabbi Shlomo Kook (1929-1971), a nephew of Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak HaCohen Kook, who also contributed articles to this paper (including this edition) and redirected to his post office box (290). Complete newspaper (12 pages), with fold at center and some stains; a few minor tears at the bottom; size: 23.4 x 30.1cm. For whatever reason, the mailing of this publication was subsequently charged the 3m rate in 1946, perhaps having lost its authorization for the reduced rate with the General Post Office when re-titled & published without the auspicies of the Union of Religious Writers.
