lot # 5612 - india
1854: Horizontal pair of lithographed 4a. blue & red from 2nd printing, sheet ps. 5+6, used on folded cover from Calcutta to Vienna 'Per "Oriental" via Triest', tied and cancelled by black diamond of dots, with "CALCUTTA/22/JAN/185(?)" cds, boxed "INDIA PAID" and "WIEN/1./MAER./1E" arrival cds all in red, on front or on the reverse,. The pair, laterally cut-to-shape with almost complete framelines, was able to pay the British ship rate from Calcutta to Alexandria, while the Austrian Lloyd carried the cover to Triest, and overland to Vienna, respective rate marks "9/9" in blue and "18" (Kreuzer) in red on front. The folded cover with some minor imperfections as central folds, but an interesting destination Austria via Triest, and a scarce franking.
