"Medora". 1837 (June 19) Entire from George Galbraith in Sydney to William Galbraith in Scotland, endorsed "Per Medora" with red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / SYDNEY" datestamp and manuscript "3", carried on the "Medora" as far as Brazil. The "Medora" was wrecked on 25th September on the Brazilian coast 30 miles north of Bahia, the main top mast breaking, the ship being driven among the breakers, the crew of 13 being rescued by a schooner...

S.V "Belle". 1854 (Dec 19) Entire letter to London "P. Severn", the reverse with Bahia British P.O and London (JA 15 1855) datestamps, charged 1/-. The wax seal impressed "British Consulate, Bahia", the letter reading "The Brig Belle having been wrecked the inclosed letter is returned. British Consulate, Bahia 19 Decr. 1854". P.S "Bearn". 1865 (Feb 22) Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Paris bearing 1861 280 reis red (four large margins) tied by a vertical oval of bars, datestamps of Rio de Janeiro, "BRESIL / CALAIS" and Paris (both Apr 7) with red boxed "PD". Carried on the French paddle steamer "Bearn" which left Rio for Bahia on February 25th but was caught in a storm on the 27th, and stranded a mile off shore by strong currents 47 miles south of Bahia....

S.S "Santa Ana". 1921 (Mar 21) Official Post Office Business cover from Columbus to the Postmaster at Cristobal, scorch marks to the reverse, with the violet cachet "This piece of mail damaged by / fire and water aboard S.S. "Santa / Ana" March 24, 1921". The "Santa Ana" left New York for Valparaiso on March 23rd, the mailroom found to be on fire the following day. This was extinguished but 42 mail bags were burnt, three others scorched...

U.S.S "Denver". 1928 (Sep 9) Cover to New York with USA 2c tied by "U.S.S / DENVER" duplex, signs of burning at the lower left edge, handstamped "RECEIVED IN DAMAGED CONDITION / at NORFOLK VA.". The U.S.S "Denver" was serving in Central American waters when this cover was posted; it is not known what incident caused the fire damage.

S.S "Tucuman". 1951 (Mar 7) Cover from Buenos Ayres to Switzerland, water stained and the stamp washed off, red "BV" transorma, handstamped "Incendie en mer". Carried on the S.S "Tucuman", which was en route from Buenos Ayres to Genoa when a fire broke out in its No. 2 hold on March 28th. This was extinguished by flooding the hold before the ship put into Las Palmas the following day. Very few covers recorded. Photo on Page 61.
