Large poster for an exhibition of artist Jacob Steinhardt, Berlin, 1966
Jacob Steinhardt (1887-1968), painter and woodcutter, was an important artist who came from Germany to Israel in the thirties. This exhibition presented his work in Berlin, two years before his death.
When young he studied at the Berlin School of Art and was close to artists Henri Matisse and Theophile Steinlen. He served in the German army during World War I, and after suffering persecution when the Nazis came to power in 1933, he immigrated to Israel. Was director of the Bezalel during the fifties. His works, dealing primarily with the Bible and Judaism, have been exhibited in Israel and around the world and won re-appreciation in recent years
