From distilleries to grain brandy factories: The first documentary mention of Nordhausen brandy (not grain) dates from 1507. Grain brandy was banned until the 17th century, by around 1810 there were already 95 distilleries in Nordhausen. In the year 1907, the "Vereinigung der Nordhäuser Kornbranntweinfabrikanten e.V" still included 66 distilleries, including the Anton Wiese company
