10, 1851 3c Orange brown, Type I, pos 97L1E, just tied on small ladies envelope addressed to Boston by black circular grid with a light strike of red "New London N.H. Jul 1" (1851) date of issue double oval cancel, numerous notations on the back side including (from the recipient) "Nellies letter received July 2nd 1851, Answered July 4," also (in Chases' hand) "Paid in manuscript under thew stamp to indicate to the postmaster that the letter was to be sent prepaid. This was a common practice," and (in the same handwriting) "I remember no other July 1st 51 cover with a fancy postmark," stamp clear to large margins, tiny portion of backflap missing, Very Fine and choice; 43 July 1 covers are known franked with the 3c issue (Scott $12,500)rnProvenance: Dr. Carroll ChaseSale 3045: The Ing.
