78X1, 1861 Spartanburg SC 5¢ black on white, cut to shape as are almost all known examples, tied by straightline "PAID" on orange cover addressed to "Spartan Rifles, 5th Regt. South Carolina Volunteers, Richmond Va.", manuscript "P.M. at Richmond will please forward to Col Jenkins Head Quarters" directional notation at upper left; cover without bottom backflap and small edge faults along the bottom edge, minor staining near the stamp and a diagonal crease at the top right of the stamp; only twenty examples of this Postmaster Provisional are thought to exist on cover; signed E. Stern, ex-Hessel (H. R. Harmer, 1975); 2016 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $20,000)
