Stamp Duty 1884: Stamp Duty, Essay for the 15 s. value designed by Charles Jackson and Ludwig Lang, hand-painted on thick card (75 x 95 mm.) in reddish purple,  pale reddish purple, black and Chinese white, with hand-drawn surround and perforations in pencil. The design similar to that adopted for the issued 1 d. value. Illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on page 227. Superb and of great beauty.rnrnProvenance: Collection J.R.W. 1867/83: 5 s. indigo-blue & red on glazed paper, Die II, wmk. V over Crown, perf. 12½, an unused example with varieties: "Double Line of Perforations at Top" and "Short second "I" in SHILLINGS", fine appearance, part og. The short second "I" variety occurred once per sheet - just 275 sheets were printed - therefore a very scarce, possibly unique stamp unused. Cert. Handstamped with oval "MORE / TO PAY" in black and italic two line "Deficient Postage 1d. / Fine....6d. = 7d." in blue with amounts in manuscript. Reverse with London and Glasgow datestamps (March 22, 1869). 1873/87: 2 d. lailac-mauve, Die I, a used example on 1876 entire letter to Barnsdale, Gippsland, with interesting contents from the Penal Settlement at Pentridge, tied by Melbourne duplex (Aug 25), with Barnsdale arrival cds (Aug 29) on reverse. The entire is a two page letter with printed five line heading "Prisoners may write a letter on arrival to their friends, and one other every three months..." and is addressed to the Superintendant of Police in Barnsdale: "Having written...concerning the property that was taken from me on my arrest...I was arrested on 24th January 1871 and received a sentence of 10 years" and the letter is then internally docketed and annotated witth the replies of the Police and stating that the prisoner's propery was sold for £7 8s. 2d. A most interesting entire.
