The 7th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers was shipped out via New York to Fort Jefferson arriving there on February 12th 1862. Fort Jefferson was the largest of the so-called 'type III' masonry forts in the United States. The fort was only partly completed in 1862, so that most of the troops at the fort lived in wooden sheds and tents on the parade grounds.
