Antarctica: Operation Tabarin 1944-45: Graham Land: 1945 (Feb. 4) registered cover to Tanganyika, bearing South Orkneys Overprint 1/2d., 1d., 3d. and 9d. cancelled by Port Lockroy A1 c.d.s’s, the 1d. and 9d. additionally tied by octagonal R/1 censor handstamp in violet applied in Great Britain, resealed at left by P.C. 90 “OPENED BY/EXAMINER 3954” label and also showing, on the reverse, scarce type 11A “NEW ISLAND” deleted registration label, Port Stanley Feb. 21, Montevideo Mar. 2, Durban June 5, Dodoma June 19 and Dar-es-Salaam June 21 arrival. A most unusual cover, one of very few showing irregular cancellation of the Overprint issues. Also 1945 (Feb. 20) matching registered cover from South Georgia bearing 1/2d. to 3d. with registration label SG5A but uncensored. Photo.
