Commemorative Stamps

On May 6, 1937, the German Hindenburg burst into flames while attempting to navigate the runway at Lakehurst, New Jersey. In a matter of seconds, the once-mighty German zeppelin that completed sixty-three flights, including round trip to the United States (1936) met its fiery end. Even though the airship became fiery wreckage, the lives of nearly 2/3 of the crew members were saved.

The use of stamps in Iraq started centuries ahead of other regions and this was first run by Assyria. This was confirmed by the excavated cuneiform tablets and clay envelopes. But the formal operations of a postal service in the country happened in 1920 thanks to the British mandate given through the League of Nations. The first stamps were the definitive series that was introduced in the market in 1923 which included 12 stamps with eight different designs that tell the story of the country.

The FIFA World Cup of 2014 will be held in Brazil and is a cause for pride and celebration in this South American country. The preparations cover different aspects of the games, including promotions such as the use of football-themed stamps. The organizing body has decided to continue its stamp collection programme for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and according to latest pronouncements it will be continuing with its centennial philatelic programme which was created in 2004 to commemorate FIFA’s 100 year anniversary.

Nelson Mandela is one of the greatest people this world has ever known. He has become famous worldwide for his role towards the eradication of the apartheid in South Africa, and known as well for inspiring similar movements in different regions. To mark the death of this great man and to celebrate his great achievements, the Government of South Africa issued stamps to commemorate his life and achievements.

When one talks about music and the decadent 1970's, then surely the name Jimi Hendrix will instantly pops into the conversation. Jimi Hendrix, the legendary guitar player of his generation helped redefined the music industry with his electric rock guitar. Today he is still considered one of the greatest musicians, and rightfully so. Thought his stint at the top only lasted four years, his music and influence still live on up until this day.

The kids of today may not have known the importance of postage stamps while others may not even know what they really are. That is particularly true since in this day and age, postage stamps have lessened in number and usage. In addition, mails are often done electronically, by means of emails in computers. However, it does not mean that we should not appreciate the importance of postage stamps. Remember, these pieces of adhesive paper have mostly travelled far through cities, states and countries just to make messages reach their destinations.
