Van Dieten Stamp Auctions: in 3 centuries at your service!

In November 1892 Jan van Dieten organizes his first stamp auction. It is a great success. The 100th auction takes place in January 1906, the 200th in February 1923. Jan van Dieten passes away in January 1931. The auctions are temporarily continued by one of his employees and one and a half year later his son Hans van Dieten as the new owner and auctioneer takes over the business. Despite the crisis years Van Dieten succeeded to expand his business steadily.

On 27 September 1982 the highlight of his career takes place. On this day Hans van Dieten is appointed Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau, both on the occasion of the 500th auction as the 90th anniversary of his auction house.

Under the new ownership of Henk L.M. van Lokven the oldest Dutch stamp auction will continue to build on the growth and knowledge. How can it be explained that this company survived two world wars, two stock market crises, an oil crisis and other serious difficulties? We quote the words written in 1986 by the late J.L. van Dieten in the brochure ‘100 Years of Van Dieten Philately’: Very simple: because the company is based on trust. We are all aware of that. Our company stands or falls with the confidence that buyers and sellers put in us. To prove honesty is difficult. Nevertheless we save no expenses to convince our clientele of that.

And that is how we maintain Van Dieten Stamp Auctions: in 3 centuries at your service!
