BUTTERFLIES BUTTERFLIES (and a few moths) – possibly one of the best collections ever formed, this balance collection has around 2/3rds of the original quantity from what is believed to be the ‘Batten’ collection exhibited at the RPSL. Consisting of mainly mint stamps, the collection is presented in 21 premium cost cloth bound peg fitting (Exeter) albums containing around 4000 stamps, miniature sheets, covers, a booklet and sheets of Cinderella labels depicting butterflies (e.g. Zimbabwe ‘Buy and use RAPT TB Seals – Help fight Tuberculosis’; Rhodesia ‘The Rhodesian Society for the Blind and Handicapped’) and ephemera. Many sets are in blocks of 4 (although some are individual stamps presented as a block of 4) and mainly hinged on the top 2 stamps. The collection is superbly presented and written up, however the sets are separated by species so it may not be immediately obvious that they are complete sets. Further separation presents the collection by continents. Includes stamps found in the ‘Appendix’ section of the catalogues which have not been included in the value. Apart from a few watermark varieties identified, the collection has not been checked for flaws / errors etc. There are some gaps on pages where stamps have been extracted for separate listing. Also included is a comprehensive reference folder. A most attractive lot with a catalogue value in excess of £4,000. For those considering creating a beautiful ‘Butterflies’ collection, this lot presents an unique opportunity to leapfrog forward in one fell swoop, because in our opinion no better fundamental foundation collection exists, or could exist without an incredible amount of research, plus a massive amount of sourcing and purchasing from different Global suppliers over a sustained period of time to put this valuable butterflies collection together.
