lot # 174 - PALESTINE: POSTAL HISTORY (Incl. PRs, Overland, Maritime, Pmks & Taxed Mail)
AN UNUSUAL RETURNED COVER: Mailed HAIFA 10 AUG 25 to an officer at a hotel in Baghdad originally marked "By Overland Mail". There was insufficient postage for overland mail, so it was marked T100C. Both markings were crossed out and it traveled surface mail since it had correct 13m postage for that rate. Baghdad arrival 6 SEP 25, marked "Not at Maude Hotel, left to Beyrout," and was returned the next day (7 SEP 25 Baghdad dispatch cancel). It went back by OVERLAND MAIL because it shows a Jerusalem transit cancel 13 SEP 25 and a Haifa receiving cancel 16 SEP 25. At that time, Bedouin attacks and a Druze rebellion caused the Overland Mail to be rerouted via Amman and Jerusalem; opened for display, vf & Rare
