MAIL TO AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT REFUGEE (1) Registered Airmail cvr mailed from Walter Guttmann, a Jewish REFUGEE in LA PAZ, BOLIVIA; pmkd LA PAZ NOV 12, 1939 (figure "2" of day INVERTED!), addressed to "TRUDE SCHNEIDER, BEIRUT QUARANTINE, c/o S.S. FROSSOULA, REPUBLIQUE LIBANAISE"; backstamped BEYROUTH 4.12.39 & 6.12.39. As addressee was no longer on-board the ship, having already managed to leave quarantine, the cvr was redirected (as per information given by her fellow refugees who sailed with her on board the S. S. FRASSOULA) to "POSTE RESTANTE, TEL AVIV", endorsed in pencil. The cover was actually redirected to Tel Aviv and backstamped BEYROUTH 8.12.39 as departure. This was done in spite of sender's request written on flap's top: "AFTER 5 DAYS RETURN TO: [sender]." On its arrival in Palestine, it was opened re-sealed by censor with a pink & red PC 22 censor label tied by a 5-line boxed hstmp at front. The cover was received at Tel Aviv Poste Restante, where the postal clerk having been informed, re-addressed cover in red ink, to Trude Schneider's "c/o Dr. Spitz, Ben Yehuda 138", and the "Poste Restante" crossed out. (2) Czechoslovak pc pmkd Praha “Prague” 29.VIII.39 and addressed to Dr. Walter Spitz (host of Trude Schneider above). This date is just TWO days prior to WWII, hence one of the latest possible mail from Czechoslovakia to Palestine. Typed message in German, signed “Rudi” (Dr. Rudolf Spitz, apparently a brother of Dr. Walter Spitz above. The message regards the tensed days prior to the outbreak of the war. "Friedl is soon to start her journey, TRUDE will be a bit late.” That is, she was a Czech national and her Tel Aviv host, Dr. Walter Spitz was either a family relative, or a close friend who were informed (in hints) about her attempt to reach the safe shores of Eretz Israel. Addressed to Dr. Spitz in the same Tel Aviv address. There is Palestine censor mark at front. (3) Official Airmail stationery cvr of "Ala Littoria" (Italian Airlines), airmailed from Hermine Kohler (Hotel address, perhaps another Jewess Refugee), cancelled Gardone Riviera 29.10.39 addressed to "TRUDE" SCHNEIDER c/o Mr. SIMON, Tel Aviv...". That is, the ORIGINAL host of Trude Schneider, who due to her late arrival in Tel Aviv was replaced by Dr. Spitz. There is a Palestine censor hstmp at front. GREAT STORY TRIO!
