lot # 2081 - - SMALL HERMES HEAD athens issues

Sunday Oct 02, 2022 16:00 Europe/Athens

Mailed in 2.3.1891 from Morristown N.J. and arrived in 12.3.91 to London. Readdressed and forwarded in 13.3.91 to Athens. Arrived in 5.3.91 (17.3.91 according to Julian calendar) and it was further readdressed and mailed in 7/19.3.91 to Rome. Arrive at Rome in 25.3.91 and mailed back immediately to London where it arrived in 30.3.1891. USA overseas postage 5 cents (equal to 25 lepta) during this period for a letter up to 15grams.

The letter was overcharged with double rate. The English post office recognize that it was overrated and forwarded it to Athens without charging it. The post office of Athens forwarded it to Rome by charging the proper standard rate of 25 lepta. The Italian post office as it doesn’t bear any address in Italy didn’t keep it and send it immediately back to London without tax, considering that they only intervened between Athens and London. Very fine and very interesting and rare postal history document. (Hellas 77a).
