He served in both houses of congress and supported a national bank, successfully deterred the southern states nullification proposal, and made sure that Northern representatives followed with the Compromise of 1850 even with the Fugitive Slave Act in the legislation. He was also a well-known constitutional lawyer. He fought and won many different cases in front of the Supreme Court. The addressee was his son who normally went by Fletcher Webster. Fletcher Webster served as the Chief of the United States State Department when his father was the Secretary of State. He served in the Civil War as a colonel of the 12th Massachusetts volunteer infantry.
