Antarctica: British Expedition 1910-13: Small expedition envelope addressed by Lieutenant Teddy Evans to Sir Clements Markham in London, franked by Victoria Land 1d. by Jan. 19 1911 expedition c.d.s, the earliest date, vertical fold well clear of adhesive and some very faint staining. Lieutenant Edward R.G.R. Evans, R.N., was second-in-command of the expedition and captain of the “Terra Nova”. He accompanied Scott to within 150 miles of the Pole, but later became seriously ill with scurvy and was invalided home, only narrowly surviving the return journey. Sir Clements Markham, former President of the Royal Geographical Society, was the principal organiser of the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04, and assisted with fundraising for the 1910 Expedition, serving on the organising committee and arranging the deal which brought in Lieutenant Evans as second-in-command in return for the abandonment of Evans's own expedition plans.
