International Postal Connections to Europe - Romania 1865 (Nov 11): Cover from Pitesti to Vienna franked by Romania Cuza 1865 20 pa. red, ample to large margins all round, tied by "PITESCI 26/11" cds, transit of Romanian P.O. in Bucharest on reverse and passed to Austrian P.O. with BUCAREST datestamp (Nov 27) in black on front (Tchilinghirian fig. 714). Straight line PORTO in black applied in Bucharest and charged due '25' kreuzer on arrival. Minor imperfections of no significance, a remarkable cover, the Cuza issue being used to an external destination being extremely rare, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume XII on page 113 and 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 434. rnProvenance: Collection 'Moldau', 167. Corinphila sale (Dec. 2010), lot 7089.rnNote: Pitesti only had a Fieldpost office during the Crimean War which was closed in April 1857 and not transfered into a Consular Post Office. Mail from Pitesti abroad had therefore to be sent by the Romanian Post to the next Austrian Levant P.O., in this case in Bucharest. The 20 para Cuza definitive covers therefore only the Romanian inland journey to Bucharest and the PORTO handstamp indicates this fact.
