1840: 1 d. black, Plate 2, lettered JH, a used example with large margins all round, on 1840 entire letter from the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse addressed to Robert Stevenson, Engineer for Northern Lighthouses in Edinburgh, cancelled by neat red Maltese Cross. "Stranraer" cds in red on reverse (Dec 4) and Edinburgh arrival of the following day adjacent. The entire emanates from the Robert Stevenson / Stephenson correspondence, the Chief Engineer for the Northern Lighthouses, he was both designer and builder of various lighthouses and inventor of the intermittent flashing light for lighthouses and Grandfather to the author Robert Louis Stephenson.
