1877: De La Rue hand-painted Essay for proposed 4 d. value, imperforate on white stamp-sized paper applied to thick card, the painting in shades of mauve, reddish-violet and Chinese white painted over the original 6 d. Essay of 1874 (pictured in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP in the centre of page 5003) previously overprinted CANCELLED in red; with changed corner ornaments and FOUR PENCE value painted over SIX PENCE. Further large scale hand-painted design for the lower left ornament in black and Chinese white below; handstamped 30 AUG 77 at upper right.
