1902: De La Rue Essay for the 1 d. value, with photographic head-plate and printed Crown; GIBRALTAR at top, the frame and POSTAGE & REVENUE, decoration and Duty Plate all hand-painted in black, pale blue and Chinese white with pencil perforation surround, on thick card. This Essay was submitted upon request (Jan 16, 1902) by the Governor of Gibraltar for a 'special' 1 d. design. It was turned down by the Colonial Office on February 27 because of the additional costs. Illustrated in 'The De La Rue Collection' edited by Frank Walton on page 3265.
