Day 3 - Great Britain, British Colonies, Pre-Union South Africa - the Besançon Collection (Part Ii)

1854: Embossed 6 d. violet, two examples with just touched to large margins used with 1 d. red star on 1856 cover to Venice, tied by "140" Redditch numeral obliterators in black. Struck with two line INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED in black at left, with Calais entry mark also on obverse (Oct 9). Reverse with Redditch cds, London cds and "Venezia" arrival (13/10) in black and charged '22/9 = 31" centesemi due in manuscript on arrival. The cover with enclosure which has caused a horizontal file fold, presumably found to be double as 1/1 d. was correct rate for a ¼ ounce letter.
