1840 (May 5): Mulready 1 d. black envelope, stereo A134, used one day before the Official issue, mailed within London to Maida Hill cancelled "Chief Office / 1D. PAID" in red (as the envelope was used prior to issue an additional 1 d. had to be paid, the Maltese Cross being introduced on the following day), with fine octagonal arrival datestamp displaying well on flap 'PD / MY 5 / 1840' in red. Some slight soiling a nd corner edge faults but an extremely rare and most attractive usage: just 9 such examples are recorded in Jackson's "May Dates" where this example is recorded on page 215 and illustrated on page 214.
