lot # 10127 - brit. colonies queensland
Chalons 1864/65: 6 d. yellow-green, perf. 13, a horizontal pair used on 1871 cover endorsed "via Marseilles" to Gateshead, Co. Durham, tied by a splendid strike of "124" numeral obliterator with corresponding "RAVENSWOOD / QUEENSLAND" cds (Aug 23) alongside - believed to be the sole usage recorded, with "Bowen" transit and Gateshead arrival (Oct 28) on reverse. Ravenswood was a mining town some 1325 kms NNW of Brisbane. The cover overpaid 3 d. so presumably the mining had been successful. Listed in the Ben Palmer Queensland census on page 201. Cleaned but a fine cover.rnProvenance: Macray, Melbourne, 13-14 Dec 1983, lot 1632.
