1858, 6 d., Perkins Bacon die proof unfinished (without value and TASMANIA), in black on high volume thin woven paper, removed from the card paper, with edge of die split at left, this is a typical and caracteristic blemish for an origin proof, which occure during the printing process with a rose-engine (because of the heavy impact, this is why the card paper is needed to produce a homogeneous print pressure and to not wreck the Die), the volume of the paperstructure points to a originated production a long time before 1870, due to TINSLEY one page 24 black printings are contemporary too and Robson Low says that the proofs of Perkins Bacon are cut to shape to avoid the tension because of the used rose-engine (vol. IV, page 169), a little toning at upper right is mentioned for accuracy, this is a guaranteed contemporary Die proof in any aspect, a rare master piece of (philatelistic) printing history, VF! Estimate 5.000€.
