lot # 6 - United States Postmasters' Provisionals St. Louis, Mo.
1846 5c black on bluish pelure paper, Plate III, Type III, position 5, pen cancel, margins all around, natural pre-print paper crease at bottom, sealed tear at left and an internal paper break above "office", otherwise fine, with 2019 PFC. Approximately 35 are thought to exist (both on and off cover) and the vast majority have faults (Scott notes that "values of Nos.11X7-11X8 reflect the usual poor condition of these stamps, which were printed on fragile pelure paper. Attractive examples with minor defects sell for considerably more. Used values are for pen-canceled stamps")
