1870, 24 November, "VILLE D'ORLEANS", letter franked with Siege 20c. blue, originally addressed to Brieuc and redirected to Saint Servan with arrival marks 9 Dec on reverse. Balloon "Ville d'Orleans" crashed on 25 Nov 1870 near Lidfjell/Norway after a tough crossing of the North Sea. Both pilots, Mr. Rolier and Mr. Bezier, survived the crash. To commemorate the event a special medal for the benefit of wounded French soldiers was produced (35000 pieces). Enclosed is one of these medals affixed to a certificate, signed by pilot Rolier.
