1897, card 1 C. carmine canc. large dollar "PEKING 16 APR 98" to navy MD aboard german cruiser SMS Irene, via Shanghai with large dollar "SHANGHAI 20 APR 98" and same day local post C to Tsingtau with arrival "TSINTANFORT 25/4 98" (first german dater of Tsingtau, then just a provisional navy fort). Sender probably was a serviceman of the german legation guards. SMS Irene was at Foochow by April 25 and continued to Philippines to take part in the german squadron survey beginning May, 1898. Pencil sign J. Kilian on reverse stating Tsintanfort dater as "genuine". Early usage of a 1 C. rate to Tsingtau.
