1871 FRANCE-ICELAND COVER: Small cover from Le Croisig, France to a Captain of a fishing sloop in Reykjavik, ICELAND via Copenhagen, and returned, franked by 1862-70 Laureated 40c. orange and 1870 Bordeaux issue 10c. bistre, cancelled by 'gros chiffre' "1231", with '1 June 1871' Le Croisig despatch cds, red boxed "PD", backstamped at Copenhagen (June 5) and struck there with boxed "Utilstrækkelig/frankeret" (Insufficiently franked) in blue, arriving Reykjavik on 31. Aug. 71 (cds on front) but could not be delivered, with "retour" in m/s and handstamp "RETOUR/A L'ENVOYEUR/REBUTS" in blue alongside, sent back again via Copenhagen, Paris and T.P.O. Paris-Nantes, arriving Le Croisig on Oct. 25th, 1871. A FINE AND MOST ATTRACTIVE COVER, AND A VERY RARE PRE-UPU DESTINATION. B. Beskow certificate. (Ex Crawford collection.)
