1834, Letter from St. Croix, dated '12 April 1834, to London 'per Packet' (endorsed in m/s), with boxed "PACKET LETTER" h/s in red and charged "2/2(d)' in m/s on front, London '16 May 1834' arrival cds on the reverse. (Note: The British P.O. in St. Croix had been closed down in 1815. After this date the mail for Europe was handled by postal agencies and it was forwarded to St. Thomas' harbour at Charlotte Amalie by customs boat, placed directly on board the packet boat without passing through a Post Office (no postal markings from St. Thomas). The special "PACKET LETTER" postmark was introduced at a number of seaports in the 1840's and was applied to unstamped letters brought ashore from packets. This letter represents an early example of this postal marking.)
