4d die proof in dull claret on India paper (36x42mm) affixed to a slightly larger piece of thin card. A rare & beautiful proof. Ex Harry Lower: acquired for $5750.
2/- imperforate plate proof marginal block of 4 from the right of the sheet in black on ungummed unwatermarked paper, the lower pair with ironed-out crease.
1/- brown SG 60-61 group block of 8 (4x2), small tear at the top of the third unit, untidy circle-in-bars cancels, Cat £160++. Stated to be the largest recorded multiple.
2d pale red SG 24a with "squiggle" manuscript cancel on cover to North Adelaide, lmanuscript "PO/Pt Macdonnell/21 March 1861" at upper-left, poor Mount Gambier & fair GPO transit b/s. Superb! Opened late-1860. [Apparently the post office "furniture" had still not arrived. A similar cover sold for $391 at our auction of 23/9/2011]
1/- olive-yellow (creased at lower-left) & a distinctly brighter shade, Adelaide cds of OC24/1862 or OC27/62. These shades are believed to have been the result of immersion aboard the "Colombo" which foundered off Minicoy Island in the Laccadives on 19/11/1862. [Illustrated by Brian Peace at page 101]
