 Lot 12748 - Schweiz - Besonderheiten - Auktionshaus Christoph Gärtner GmbH & Co. KG 58th AUCTION - Day 4Schweiz - Besonderheiten: Huge group with the balance of correspondence of a Swi Huge group with the balance of correspondence of a Swiss volunteer in the Wehrmacht. These are all covers and/or letters going home to Switzerland (Most/all to Zurich) There are 16 covers , and 15 of these have contents. In addition there is a written but uncancelled (presumably inserted) postcard, and there are 15 additional letters; in total, a huge amount of written documentation from a member of Marine-Artillerie-Abteilung 240. This artillery unit was stationed on the English Channel by Wimereux. It was destroyed by the Allies during the Normandy invasion in September of 1944. Some of the letters give the location as 'Kanalkueste' (Channel Coast) and one of the locations has been excised by a censor. The covers are all censored, as volunteer feldpost should be -- many multiple times, as are many of the contents. The Swiss, being nominally neutral, were not allowed to join the German army. However, approximately 1000 of them did so, according to the Michel feldpost handbook. Such feldpost is such very scarce. KG 53rd AUCTION - Day 2 Overseas, EuropeSchweiz - Besonderheiten: 1875, cover from Zofingen (Aargau) to ALEPPO,SYRIA, be 1875, cover from Zofingen (Aargau) to ALEPPO,SYRIA, bearing 1868 25 Rp. green "Sitzende Helvetia gezähnt" issue, a fresh example with usual perf., tied by clear despatch cds "ZOFINGEN 12.X.75" with a further perfect strike alongside in addition to "P.D." handstamp. Reverse transit postmarks TORINO (Oct 14), BRINDISI (15 oct), Italian P.O. "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO" (Oct 21), French P.O. "ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE" (Oct 29), "BEYROUTH SYRIE" (Nov 2) and "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" (Nov 5). Upon arrival the PD handstamp was crossed out and the cover was taxed with '9' décimes. In October 1875, the GPU treaty was already in force in Switzerland and the majority of the European countries, while France did not join until January 1st, 1876. The 25 Rp. franking and the PD handstamp had therefore been applied erroneously, thinking that the GPU rate was also valid to the French P.O. in Alexandretta. However at that point in time, the bilateral contracts were still in force with 90 centimes for an unpaid letter to a French P.O. in the Levant. The last part of the journey from the French office in Alexandretta to Aleppo was most likely done by courier. ONLY FIVE COVERS FRANKED WITH THIS ISSUE ARE KNOWN SENT TO THE VERY RARE DESTINATION OF TODAY SYRIA, WITH A POSTAGE DUE HANDSTAMP IT IS UNIQUE.
