(The message is datelined "Chefoo, China, Shantung Province, 27 May 1899" and reads, "Your first letter of 6 April arrived a few days ago. Thank you for that. I hurry to answer. I am very pleased to hear that you, your family, and your parents are doing well. I can say the same about myself. As typhoid is prevalent in Tsingtao, the cruiser squadron is presently in Chefoo, where we held large maneuvers.
