1872: Paris print 5 b. bistre in a horizontal strip of four, used on 1873 entire letter to Vienna tied by "BUCURESTI" cds's (Nov 10) in black. Seemingly underpaid 5 bani but accepted (probably due to the number of stamps) with "PD" in black at right and Vienna arrival cds (Nov 13) on reverse of a fine and attractive eniire. Postage Due 1869: Unpaid entire letter from Genova, Italy to Buharest endorsed "via Pest", with Genova despatch cds (Dec 27), red manuscript "23" (soldi) and blue manuscript "85" (kreuzer) on obverse; struck on arrival with framed "45 BANI" and "85 BANI" Due markings in black for 130 bani to pay (Kiriac figs. 1662+1667). Reverse with Pest transit and "Bucuresti / Dim" arrival cds. Scarce and fine entire. Ex collection Sassower.

1868: 18 b. carmine-rose, a fine used example with good margins all round, used on 1868 entire letter to Braila, tied by fine strike of grill obliterator with "CALAFATUL" despatch cds (Dec 26) in black below (Kiriac fig. 341). Reverse, small flap tear, with "Bucuresci / Dimineata" transit (Dec 29) and Braila arrival cds.

1872: 10 b. blue, perf. 12½ (Transfer Type 4), a used example on 1872 cover to Galatz tied by BACAU cs in black with scarce framed "FRANCO" at right in greenish blue applied by sender - the sender's cachet being in the same ink. The stamp further tied in manuscript by "8" in ink on receipt. Reverse with "Galati" cds (Sept 18) in black. Ex collection Sassower.

1882: Cover from Berlad to Vienna prepaid in cash as accompanying valuables, endorsed "Mit ein group in Werthe von fcs. 1'200" with notation of rates below "340 grams / Franco 2 (lei) 25 (bani) + 1 lei 5 bani"; with Fiscal 10 b. black on cream applied and tied by "BERLAD" circular datestamp (April 3) in black. The 10 bani FDiscal was applied regardless of value or destination. A scarce and attractive usage. Ex collection Sassower.

Postage Due 1867/74: Austria 5 kr. red, a horizontal pair (Mi. 37), used on underpaid 1874 cover to Braila tied by "Landkronagasse / Wien" cds (Feb 12) in black, with erroneous "P.D." below. Manuscript "30" in blue crayon and correspondingly charged with "30 BANI" Due marking in black (Kiriac fig. 1659). Reverse with Braila thimble cds of arrival. A charming and scarce cover. 1865: Cuza 20 pa. red on white paper, two examples, each with large margins all round, used on registered 1865 cover to Galatz tied by "FOCSANI" circular datestamps (Aug 14) in black (Kiriac fig. 391). Framed "RECOMANDAT" in blue at left and reverse with "Galatz / Moldavie" arrival cds (Aug 16) in black. Closed tear on face panel but nevertheless a most attractive and scarce cover. 1871: 5 b. rose-red, a horizontal pair somewhat roughly separated and just touched at left, used on 1872 entire letter to Braila endorsed "Cu vaporu" at base (carried on the Danube to Braila), tied by "CALAFAT / SERA" circular datestamp (March 25) in blue (Kiriac as fig. 440). Framed "P.D." at right in blue and reverse with faint Braila arrival in black. Scarce: illustrated as fig. 2 in the London Philatelist article. Ex collection Sassower.rnrnNote: The "Cu Vaporu" or "Pr. Vapora" endorsements are only ever seen on mail from Calafat to Braila - carried at 10 bani internal single rate down the Danube. See the article by Gabby Sassower in the "London Philatelist" of July-August 1978 (Volume 87, 1027-1028) which is enclosed with the lot, where he proves this cover was carried by a DDSG steamer.

1861: Entire letter registered as sent containing valuables (gold coins of a weight of 35 kg.) to Galatz with "JASSY / MOLDOVA" cds (Dec 29) and rare oval framed manuscript filled "FRANCO / JASSY / 103 Lei 20 Par." handstamp in black (Kiriac figs. 292+1483) - this last handstamp used to denote that the writer was forwarding valuables. Reverse with "Galatz / Moldova" arrival cds (Feb 26) in black. A very rare entire. Ex collection Sassower.rnrnNote: This cover illustrated in "The London Philatelist" of March-April 1980 (Volume 89 number 1047-1048) on page 53. The cover marked at 103 (old) Lei and 20 parale = 4'140 parale. Thus, If the cover had been sent with postage stamps attached it would have required a total of 138 of the top denomination of 30 parale stamps.

Austrian PO's 1862: Entire letter to Vienna struck with superb "BAKEU" cds of despatch (April 17) in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 721), reverse with "JASSY" transit cds (April 18) also in blue (fig. 757) displaying well and Vienna arrival in red and chargd '25' kreuzer due.
