Lot 75 - germany other items - Guillermo Jalil - Philatino Auction #151 - WORLDWIDE + ARGENTINA: general auction with very good lots World War II: Lot of photographs, cover, mail receipt, membership card of the Deutscher Volksbund für Paraguay, and letter of the German Ladies Committee, all related to the aid work led by Mr. Anton Aerts, who for several years sent cigarettes and tobacco to hundreds of German prisoners in various countries (from 1942). Mr Aerts, a German farmer who lived in Colonia Fram (Paraguay), organized among his German neighnbors a collection of money and tobacco to alliviate the situation of German POW in various camps. Some neighbors contributed with money, others with tobacco, ground coffee and sugar. In June 1942 he sent the first shipment to Ottawa. The connections to channel those shipments were made via the Deutscher Volksbund of Paraguay, and in order to monitor the shipments the prisoners that received the goods had to notify it by mail, using letters or cards with free frank. In face of the growing difficulties to channel the shipments to Canada, in early 1943 Mr Aerts contacted the German Ladies Committee in Buenos Aires (which assisted the Red Cross Argentina) to ask for their help, and the committee agreed to intercede to help send the shipments to Canada in large boxes of the Red Cross.
