Cover bearing a 1882 Large Dragon wide margins 3 Ca.brown red with spectacular PLATE FLAW “Broken Claw” tied by blue seal “Peking” to small western style cover w.o. reverse blue”I.G.OF CUSTOMS PEKING MAR 2982”. Adressed to Herrn Carl Wolter c/o Meyer & Co.Tientsin with pencil transcription”Shichang”.Meyer & Co. was established 1866 in Hong Kong by Hamburg merchants Hermann Constantin Eduard Meyer (1841-1926) and his brother H.D.Johannes Meyer. In 1873 they opened a branch in Tientsin under Meyers business partner, Carl Andreas Wolter (1858-1916). More branches followed at Hamburg (1877), London (1883), Shanghai, Hankow, Antung, Chinan and Tsingtao, also in Korea where Wolter became manager in charge: Chemulpo(1884), Pusan (1886) etc. The Chinese name of the company was “Shi Chang Yang Hong” with trade names “Golden Dragon” and “Upon Novels.” E Meyer was honorary Korean consul in Hamburg, Germany 1886-1906.The Meyer company exists in Hamburg till today.Less than a handfull of inland covers with large dragon 3 Ca. single used from Peking are recorded. A comparable cover dated 1882.10.22 (Interasia 2016 #352 real.HK$ 276.000) and another, also to Meyer&Co. 1885.1.29 (James B.Whang sale,Christies 1994 #1829) are noteworthy. This is the largest multiple of 1878 Large Dragon 5ca on cover, paying for double rate. Transit Customs Shanghai (11 Aug). Transferred to French PO with verticle pair of 35c stamp cancelled by ‘5104’ diamond of dots, with Shanghai (12 Aug) cds alongside. (1 Mar) Kiukiang to Peking, bearing 1878 thin paper 12ca yellow-green, Setting I, horizontal strip of three [3-4-5], cancelled by Customs Kiukiang type 1 cds in red, with another fine strike on reverse, as well as Customs Shanghai transit cds (3 Mar). Address partly excised and patched with white tape, nevertheless a very fine and rare usage from this town with its colored cacnellation. One of three Large Dragon covers recorded from Kiukiang. Addressed to the Commissioner of Customs, Shanghai. Front only. This is the earliest recorded ‘on service’ cover bearing Large Dragons. No official covers bearing Large Dragons are known complete. Arrived Customs Shanghai (17 Nov) where a 3ca Large Dragon stamp added to pay for domestic postage, and sent onward to I.G. of Customs Peking (28 Nov), then re-directed to Customs Shanghai (8 Dec). Cover bearing on reverse 1883 Large Dragon, thick paper, clean-cut perf, 1ca green, Setting V, horizontal strip of three [position 11-19-20] and single + 5ca lemon-yellow, cancelled by Chefoo killer seal in black, matching ’Customs Chefoo’ cds alongside. Transit ‘Customs Shanghai’ (23 Apr) also tied to 5ca stamp. In combination with France 25c bistre on straw (creased), cancelled by ‘Shang-hai/Chine’ cds (24 Apr). One 1ca stamp [pos.20] is crossed by filing fold and has a defective corner. A fine and exceptional franking paying for the 9 candarins overseas rate.
