The majority of the covers are from southern India such as Bangalore and Madras, and are distinguished by mostly varied content of interest in contemporary and military history. Particularly noteworthy are the covers from the years 1809 to 1810, which are in the context of the so-called Mutiny of Seringapatam, because of their unique historical significance and their extensive completeness. Of extraordinary rarity are also the covers in the context of the campaign against the Mahrrates in 1815. De Havilland maintained contact with the highest circles in Madras, his covers and those of his friends and relatives provide invaluable information on the eventful life of the British in faraway India. In addition to Thomas (Tom for short), the authors of the letters include his wife Eliza, his friend and fellow officer William Garrard (ca. 1778-1836) and his wife, Tom's sister Mary de Havilland (1789-1854) and Eliza's sister Martha de Sausmarez (1785-1866), James Lilliman Caldwell (1770-1863), a senior military engineer and later general, and many others.
