Antarctica: Argentine Expeditions, 1903 and later: 1908 “Uruguay” supply mission, Picture postcard of the ironclad “Independencia” signed by captain Jorge Yalour and eight other officers of the crew of the “Uruguay” at the time of its fourth Antarctic voyage, apparently sold bearing uncancelled Argentine 1c. and subsequently used, probably by a British sailor, from Birkenhead to Somerset. The Argentine adhesive subsequently overstamped by large “Tierras Australes/ORCADAS/10 Feb.08/Argentinas” handstamps in blue-black and double circles in black, all of uncertain status, possibly of propaganda intent. Also “Boletín del Centro Naval Buenos Aires” Apr.-Jun 1965 containing a reprinted account of the 1908 visit from Feb. 8 to 13 by engineer Silvano Andrew, and related correspondence. Photo

Kappe on the Dutch factory ship “Willem Barendsz” to The Hague with endorsement on flap and enclosed letter sent “In de Z.P.”, bearing Queen Wilhelmina 5c. strip of five tied by five fine strikes of ship’s rubber datestamp, and bearing Christmas charity seal on reverse. This datestamp was not officially issued but permitted by the Dutch Post Office. Photo.
