Antarctica: Operation Tabarin 1944-45: South Shetlands: 1944 (Feb. 6) legal sized envelope from the first mailing addressed to J.C. Mossop in Lincolnshire. with 1d. cancelled B3, scarce commercial item of mail. John Mossop was a specialist lawyer employed in the Admiralty's military branch for his expertise in international law. He has, together with the Foreign Office’s chief polar adviser, Dr. Brian Roberts, been credited with the selection of the “Tabarin” name (see “The Royal Navy and German Naval Disarmament 1942-47" by Chris Madsen and “Pink Ice: Britain and the South Atlantic Empire” by Klaus J. William Colbeck from Port Stanley to his fiancée in Manchester franked by Falkland 1904-12 1d. tied by both July 19 1904 F.4B c.d.s. and Manchester Aug. 2 arrival. Lieutenant William Colbeck was captain of the “Morning” and had previously served in the British Antarctic Expedition of 1898–1900, having been invited by the Norwegian Carsten Borchgrevink, and taking charge of the expedition's magnetic observation work. Antarctica: Australasian Expedition 1911-14: Envelope with enclosed two page letter on SY “Aurora” expedition letterhead dated “July 14th 12”, sent from Lyttelton to Prof. T.W.E. David (Edgeworth David, had been a member of Shackleton’s 1907-09 expedition during which he had led the first ascent of Mount Erebus and reached the South Magnetic Pole)at Sydney University, by John King Davis, captain of the “Aurora” and second-in-command of expedition. The cover franked by 1d. Dominion cancelled “18 JL 12” and letter endorsed “I am sending per favour of/Capt Wyllie S.S. Ulimoroa (H.P. & Co.)/a small parcel addressed to you/containing some specimens”. Mention is made of the large collection of birds made by Edgar Waite, curator of Canterbury Museum, Christchurch, another voyager on the “Aurora”and Davis reports poor weather conditions and state of the vessel, resulting in failure to conduct all the intended deep sea soundings and dredgings. “We found the Macquarie Island party all well and spent 14 days there as we found it absolutely impossible to keep station after we left the vicinity of the Royal Company Islands where we spent four days and saw nothing of them.” Photo.
