Largest regional expansion 1864 (Oct 14): Cover from Salonica to Vienna, franked with 1864 Arms 5 s. rose, 10 s. blue, and horizontal pair and four single 15 so. brown, all perf. 9½, superbly embossed, cancelled by two line "SALONICH / 14. OCTOBRE" datestamps in blue (Tchilingirian fig. 594). Reverse with Vienna arrival cds (27/10). Upper stamps with wrinkles and toning, cover with horizontal file fold, nevertheless an extraordinary and colourful franking. Illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 303, cert. Eichele (2008).rnNote: Interesting cover: four months after the introduction of stamps, a superb 'Treppenfrankatur' to cover the third weight rate from the Levant to Austria with three times 20 s. for the Levant and three times 15 s. for Austria. Such multiple frankings had to be used for higher weight items as the 15 s. stamp was the highest issued denomination prior to 1867.
