Alain Leroy Locke (1885-1954) was a prominent American writer, philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts, and the first African-American Rhodes scholar. His grandfather, Ishmael Locke (1814-52), a free-born black man, was sent to Liberia to set up schools for the native population. In the letter he writes to his employer complaining of the lateness of his salary and of "the ridiculous mode…of paying me on a route where vessels pass but once in 3 or 6 months" and of being forced to sell his books to pay for his doctor bills, having been "sick for 97 days".
