6d dark blue SG 3 horizontal pair (large margins except at the top where touched in a couple of places) tied to mercantile entire by circle-in-bars cancel, fine 'PAID/MY13/1857/=ADELAIDE-S.A.=' cds in red alongside, unusual 'FORWARDED BY/WM YOUNGHUSBAND JUNR & Co/ADELAIDE' cachet on the flap, to "Broadhead Saddleworth Yorkshire" endorsed "Simlah/via Marseilles", superb "tombstone" 'PAID/LIVERPOOL/SHIP/AU22/1857' d/s in red & rated "5/5" in red, Manchester transit b/s. [Colin Tabeart at pages 195-6, states that some of the mail intended to be carried per "Simla" was actually sent per "Great Western". Tabeart states "Simla" arrived at Liverpool 1/8/1857. The "Great Britain" arrived 23/8/1857 so clearly this cover was put aboard that ship. The Liverpool d/s suggests Tabeart's arrival date is a day late]

2d rose-carmine SG 2 fine strip of 3 (margins close to large except at left & top of the first unit where a little shaved) tied to part-entire signed "Lav Glyde" by roller cancel, Adelaide (untidy cds in red at lower-left), to Yorkshire "Per Bosphouis [sic] & Overland", London transit of 6SP6/1855 & very fine 'HALIFAX' arrival cds in blue. Carried per "Bosphorus", departed 24/6/1855; then per P&O; mail arrived 5/9/1855. [This was the last contract sailing of the General Screw Steamship Co, the company being unable to fulfill the contract because its ships were requsitioned for the Crimean War. The sender was Lavington Glyde who arrived in Adelaide in July 1850. By 1857 he was a member of the House of Assembly, holding many important posts including Colonial Treasurer. He speaks of the setting out of a new town named Dulwich - east of Adelaide - & further anticipated subdivisions]
